A classical bronze-cast Khmer style Garuda, sculpted in the popular late Angkor / early Bayon style, an ancient mix of Hindu and Buddhist art and culture.
The Garuda is a qHindu divinity, usually the mount (vahanam) of Vishnu, and is often depicted as having the body of a strong man with an eagle's face, talons for feet and with a crown on his head. The worship of Garuda is believed to remove the effects of poisons.
The Garuda remains a popular temple presence in modern day Cambodia, both in Wats and the ancient temples, where he would be a large fixture adorning the corners of the external walls, as a symbol of strnegth and defence. Among other deities, as today, in the past it would have been on display in the most sacred and revered shrines within the great temples of the Angkor Era, emblazoned with gold finery, colourful banners and surrounded by incense and jewels. Bronze, a mixture of metals consisting primarily of copper and tin, was a preferred medium for giving form to the Hindu and Buddhist divinities worshipped in Angkor and throughout the Khmer empire. The Khmer have always viewed bronze as a noble material, connoting prosperity and success, and it has played a meaningful role in their culture over many centuries.
We are sure this will bring to your home a unique atmosphere, representing the skilled work of Cambodian bronzesmiths and sculptors, whose traditions and craft have been honed and passed down through many generations, reaching hundreds of years back to the majesty of the Angkor period.
Exceptional example of Cambodian artistry and achievement.
