PHILODENDRON ATABAPOENSE, Beautiful Leaves, Maroon Back, Very Nice Aroid Plant!!

Description

How often do you see a Philodendron with green leaves and a red back? This trait is uncommon, and the few species that have this desirable characteristics usually figure prominently in the "must have" lists of aroid growers.
Philodendron atabapoense
is one of those species, and the intense maroon coloration on the reverse sides of young leaves is very attractive and contrasts nicely with the clear green leaves. Unfortunately, the reddish color becomes less intense as the plant matures, and mature leaves may have just a hint of maroon. This attractive species climbs slowly as it grows, and mature leaves can reach a maximum of 16-18" in length.
Philodendron atabapoense
is native to Venezuela, where it grows at elevations of 300-450 feet. Although this species prefers warm, humid conditions, it can tolerate cold temperatures very well. Over the past few years, my greenhouse has dipped into the mid-40's from time to time, and
P. atabapoense
showed no signs of stress. For me, this species grows well in a potting mix that holds moisture but also provides good drainage. I use loosely packed sphagnum moss, which holds moisture but allows allows air to reach the roots.
This attractive
Philodendron
will grace any tropical plant collection, especially as a brightly-colored juvenile. The first three photos show the leaves of a mature plant, with the beautiful maroon coloration on the reverse. You are bidding on the plant in photos 4-8, a healthy, well-rooted specimen in a 3.25" pot.
