    1948 / R-1988 -
Art by THOMAS STARR. Directed by : Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger - CAST :  Anton Walbrook, Marius Goring, Moira Shearer, Robert Helpmann, Ludmilla Tcherina, Leonide Massine. PLOT SUMMARY : Thhe classic 1948 Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger English dance ballet romantic melodrama ("... Dance she did, and dance she must between her two loves."; "There has never been a motion picture like 'The Red Shoes'"; "There have never been reviews as wonderful as these..."; "Winner of 3 OSCARs" including"BEST WRITING. Nominated for BEST PICTURE. Based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. BEHIND THE SCENES TRIVIA : Moira Shearer did not want to make this movie because of the difficulty to perform the many dance scenes. It took Powell and Pressburger more than a year to convince her to make it. Widely considered to be one of the movies that made the best use of three-strip Technicolor. This is one of director Martin Scorsese's favorite films and he owns a large collection of memorabilia related to it, including a pair of the red slippers signed by Moira Shearer, a copy of the screenplay signed by directors Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, an original set of storyboards (which were a gift from Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts), and several movie posters from around the world. Gene Kelly found this movie to be so great, he said he saw it over and over again. He told "M.G.M." executives to see "The Red Shoes" and the "Metro" executives found it just as beautiful. Kelly persuaded them for the go-ahead for "An American In Paris", which was inspired by "The Red Shoes".
