    Lignum vitae
    is an extremely slow-growing broadleaf evergreen which ultimately reaches 30 feet in height and casts light shade, but few people have seen plants of this size because it is not grown in the trade.
    Scientifically classified as Guaiacum,
    lignum vitae
    extract is
    useful
    for skin disorders, respiratory complaints and syphilis. The resin from the tree is also
    good
    to treat dry mouth, thirst and to excite warmth in the stomach. It may also be used to treat rheumatism and toothaches.
    Lignum vitae produces the highly valued
    wood
    known as lignum vitae (“
    wood
    of life”). It is the densest and
    hardest wood
    known in the world.
    The one to two-inch-long, leathery, dark green leaves are joined at many times throughout the year by the production of large clusters of bluish purple flowers, the old flowers fading to a light silvery-blue and creating a shimmering haze over the rounded canopy. These flowers are followed by small, heart-shaped, yellow orange berries, appearing on the tree at the same time as the bluish purple flowers and creating a lovely sight.

    Germination success varies, so plant more than you need.

    he key is to remove the black casing around the seed. This time-consuming, but not too difficult to do with a pocketknife. S
    crape off just the casing around the rounder end.
    2)
    Soak the seeds in water for 36 hours. Change water daily.
    3)
    Fill a 4 to 6 Inch pot with a soilless seed starting mix. Use a pot that has at least one drainage hole in the bottom. Prepare 1 Pot for each seed.
    4)
    Plant 1/4" Inch deep, smoothing the soil back over them. Water until it starts to seep out of the drainage hole.
    5)
    Use a heated propagator to maintain a temperature of 80-85 degrees F.
    Maintaining warmth during germination is Very Important.
    6)
    Place the pots in a bright sunny area. Water around the seeds whenever it starts to dry out around the top, keeping it evenly damp during the germination period and the first few weeks of growth. While germination can still be erratic, with the right temperature and moisture, most
    Lignum vitae seeds will take between 10 and 17 days to germinate.
